About Carleton GNCTR

Carleton University has been participating in the Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race for over 20 years and has seen tremendous successes. The team is traditionally made up of engineering students whom enjoy the practical aspect of engineering as well as the nature of the competition. Each year approximately 500 students representing 30 teams travel from across Canada to compete against their fellow engineers from different universities and technical institutions

Volunteer students spend many hours designing and manufacturing the toboggan, technical display, and other competition elements starting as early as May, working until the competition at the end of January. It is a massive undertaking that requires a significant time commitment from everybody involved.

In 2005 Carleton Engineering had its greatest GNCTR success to date. The Carleton Stonecutters placed 1st overall and won several other awards such as ‘Best Braking System’ and the RJC Engineering Excellence Award. Carleton’s most recent success includes winning ‘Best Concrete Mix’ and ‘Most Sustainable Design’ at the competition hosted by the University of Ottawa in 2016. With the support of Carleton University, The Faculty of Engineering, the Carleton Student Engineering Society, our Sponsors and many volunteers we hope to go above and beyond these fantastic results, showcasing the talent of the engineering students at Carleton University.
